Mentorship Program Guidelines

Mentors are local counsellors, guardians and friends for Don Bosco students in Canada for exchange studies. During the students' stay in their respective universities, they will touch base with their Mentors and develop a supportive one-to-one mentoring relationship. This two-way relationship is designed to facilitate the holistic development of the students.

As Mentors, you may like to:

  • Consider family gatherings or group activities with other Mentors and Mentees, or alumni
  • Offer opinions and perspective to challenge your Mentee intellectually
Mentors should NOT:
  • Give your Mentee expensive gifts
  • Always pick up the bill. Let your Mentee pay once in a while!
  • Help you Mentee, in actual terms, for example, to secure a job¡K

How often do Mentors and Mentees meet?

This depends on the schedules of both Mentors and Mentees and it can range from weekly to monthly meeting. Typically, Mentors and Mentees meet five to six times a year, supplemented by a steady stream of communication via email, letters or phone.

What are the benefits of the Programme?

Generally, Mentees should discover a channel for greater and more direct intellectual exchange, develop stronger inter-personal communications, improve critical and creative thinking and gain perspectives and insights. For Mentees overseas, they can understand more of the local culture through their Mentors.

Mentors can maintain contact with academia and have the satisfaction of knowing that they are playing a role in the development of a young inquisitive mind. Similarly, they can gain insights and perspectives from a younger generation¡¦s point of view.
